ASU Symphonic Carillon

Fact Sheet

  • Has 258 bells.
  • Purchased by ASASU in 1966 for $25,000 – State Legislature had passed a bill that would allow them to recapture any unused “undesignated” funds. Pres. G. Homer Durham had often expressed how much a carillon would benefit the campus and supported ASASU’s efforts. • Originally dedicated January 1967.
  • In storage for 35 years; discovered by Judith Smith in Nov. 2002.
  • Transported back to Mass-Rowe Carillons in Escondido, Calif. on August 6, 2003 to be refurbished.
  • ASU’s carillon is one of only 100 such instruments manufactured by Mass-Rowe • Each note may actually play two or more bells.
  • It is currently worth $150,000 • Installed in Zuni Room on June 20, 2005. Bell cabinets are made of oak with Plexiglass covers.
  • Rededication of carillon held on Oct. 28, 2005.  Linda Vogel Yarbrough, the first student to play ASU’s carillon, was privileged to also play for the rededication.
  • First composition for ASU Carillon written by Robert LaPat of Scottsdale, entitled “Fanfare for Carillon.”
  • Escaped the devastating Nov. 7, 2007 fire in the Memorial Union and again placed in storage.
  • Moved to its new location in Old Main on April 6, 2009.
  • Reinstalled with the addition of the Flemish bells December 1-4, 2009.
  • Addition of the Harp/Celeste Bells June 19-21, 2012 .
